Be heard…rationally
We are steeped in a culture of hyperbole, gaslighting, tribalism and emotion based opinion. The only way to ensure and strengthen American Freedom is by reasoned discourse. We all tend to call out that which we see as wrong or misguided or even just plain crazy. Be prepared to back up your point of view with well researched facts. Partial or skewed “studies” or “science” charts, graphs or data all require scrutiny and cross checking. Approach debate with reason. Call stupid ideas stupid but don’t assume the person presenting is stupid. An important distinction. Don’t be too thin skinned. Insults, real or perceived, happen in impassioned debate. Stay on topic and on point in your discussion. Present well reasoned and fact (reality) based arguments in your discussion. Don’t waste too much time on trolls seeking emotional response. Emotional response without reasoned thinking is on of our big challenges.
The 1st amendment protects our speech of all types from government abridgement. It also fosters the free exchange of ideas in most circumstance. Speech isn’t “violence” and violence is never a sensible response to speech. Free to speak wisdom, free to speak foolishness. Free to speak unfounded emotion based opinions, free to speak well reasoned rational discourse. It is a challenge we face. Reject violence, hyperbolic labeling and stubborn tribal attitudes. Stay on the topic and avoid the many logical fallacies people present to defend their views.
Above all, educate others with as much courtesy and graceful humor as you can. Don’t take yourself, others or simple conversation too seriously. Embrace the exchange of ideas. .
